EV Driving: Clean, Green and Fun!
Volkswagen’s commitment to manufacturing electric vehicles comes with a lofty goal of approximately 1.5 million a year by 2025. It’s part of VW’s larger effort to make its global business completely carbon-neutral by 2050.
Going carbon neutral in the next 30 years will have an enormous impact on the environment, on the costs and availability of energy and on the way people experience driving. VW’s commitment is more than just a business strategy. It’s a strategy for planetary sustainability.
But what about the impact on individual drivers? Some of the benefits of electric vehicles are obvious: they’re green-friendly and will cost you very little in gasoline.
But did you know they’re a lot of fun to drive? If this has never occurred to you, because you figured the power source has nothing to do with the car’s performance, we invite you to discover a surprising benefit of driving EVs!
When you drive a gas-powered vehicle, you need to rev it up to a few thousand RPMs to get the maximum horsepower and torque. Most drivers are so used to this that they don’t think anything of it. It never occurred to them that a car could achieve maximum torque the instant it starts spinning.
But electric vehicles do exactly that, because they don’t depend on you to “give it gas” first. That’s how the last-generation Volkswagen e-Golf managed to get to 30 miles per hour as quickly as the same-generation Volkswagen GTI, even though the GTI had nearly 100 more horsepower than the e-Golf.
And Volkswagen is designing its electric vehicles to maximize these effects, with a low center of gravity that’s designed for better handling – including the placement of the battery itself at the bottom of the car.
By the way, EVs have no engine noise so they give off no exhaust. They’re as quiet and clean as they are fun to drive.
Many people have questions about the batteries and charging capacity. EVs come with three levels of charging power:
Level 1 is standard, and can charge with an ordinary three-prong outlet. Each hour of Level 1 charging will give you two-to-five miles of range.
Level 2 runs off 240-volt circuits, and can give you 12-to-24 miles of range per hour of charging.
Level 3 is also known as DC fast charging, and requires special equipment with heavy-duty cables and inverters. These are often found at public charging stations, and can refresh 80 percent of a battery’s capacity in 30-to-40 minutes.
Most people don’t have Level 3 charging capacity in their homes, although some are choosing to have it installed.
However you choose to charge your Volkswagen EV, you can expect a clean, quiet and fun experience driving it. And as you do, remember that you’re part of a Volkswagen commitment to revolutionize the relationship between drivers, their vehicles and the planet.
This is why Volkswagen is so committed to EVs as a future foundation of the company, and of the Volkswagen driving experience.
